Kurdish Dialects: Kurmancî vs Soranî

The difference between Kurmanji and Sorani — dialects, regions and alphabets.

Kurdish is a continuum of closely related dialects. The two most widely spoken are Kurmancî (Northern Kurdish) and Soranî (Central Kurdish).

Kurmancî is spoken across Turkey, Syria, northern Iraq and the Caucasus, and is written in the Latin-based Hawar alphabet — the one used on this site. Soranî is spoken mainly in Iraqi Kurdistan and western Iran, and is written in a modified Arabic script.

The two share most of their vocabulary and grammar but differ in pronunciation, some endings, and the writing system, so they are not always mutually intelligible in writing. Other varieties include Southern Kurdish (Kelhurî/Feylî) and the related Zazakî. kurdi.sh teaches Kurmancî.
